Our Thoughts About Athletics

Fergus - I really liked playing in the sand when you run up and jump in it.

Katherine - I liked it when I won a race on the track.

Luke - I liked doing the races.

Aria - I liked it when I won 2 races.

Cooper - I liked the hurdles because you can jump over them.

Yassmine - I liked the running because I won 2 parts.

Jett - I liked the javelin because they go far.

Devin - I like the long jump because you get to jump far in the pit.

Matthew - I liked the one where you jumped into the pit because you could skid in the sand.

Charlotte - I liked having the running race because I put lots of effort into it.

Ayushman - I liked the high jump because I can jump so high.

Donatello - I liked the high jump because I kept jumping like a rabbit on it.

CO2 Cars

What a lot of science we have been doing! This week we have been learning about aerodynamics - how that if we change the shape of a piece of paper, we can make the paper go further...

We have been learning about pressure. We know that if you put water and rocket fuel in a little container, bubbles start to form. When there are lots and lots of bubbles, and no more room for air, the pressure gets so big that it will pop!! Watch this...

Our Ramps

We learnt about friction when we were trying to get the balloon from Carolyn to Elly. We know that if there is less friction, things move faster. We made ramps to see how fast we could make our cars go. We tried lots of different materials.

Our Trip to see Dr Dave

We got to go to Dr Dave's hanger. Dr Dave told us all about planes and helicopters. We even got to sit inside a cockpit and pretend that we were flying!! What a cool trip.

FRICTION

Yesterday, we tried to make the balloon move along the piece of wool by taping it to a straw that was on the string. When we let the balloon go, the air came out, but it didn't move! Oh no!!

Today, we tried again. We changed two things...one was the length of the straw...we made it longer. We also changed the wool to nice slippery fishing wire. Watch what happened this time!!

Carolyn told us that it worked today because there was less friction. Just like if you fall over on slippery grass or wet concrete.

How Things Move

We are learning about how things move! Today we discovered how we could make a balloon move without touching it.

We could blow it up, tie a knot and then blow it with the air from our lungs.

OR we could blow it up and then let it go - our arms are showing what the balloon does then!!

Hmmm...what made the balloons move today? Can you explain this to your family? Could we make the balloons go over to Carolyn's desk? Why or why not?

Our New Mural

We have been waiting for AGES to see the new mural that Carolyn has been working on with some of the big kids. It got put up on Friday...it was SO exciting to see it. It looks AMAZING! We helped the big kids think of some of their ideas...now we can use it to help us with our learning.

Our Stories

This week we have been learning how to write for an audience so that other people are interested in our stories. We needed to talk about what an audience was. Aria told us that an audience is lots of people in a crowd. A crowd is also a group of people - maybe our friends in our class or people who read our blog - out Mums, Dads, brothers, sisters, grandma, grandad, nana and poppa.

To make our stories interesting, we decided that they needed to be longer (so we wrote for more than one day), have good information in them and they needed to be more exciting.

Here is our video. We were a little bit disappointed because we did this twice this afternoon. The first one worked the best, but the video didn't work. You can get an idea though from seeing this video. Charlotte's dad was here to help us.

Mentos and Coke - our second try!

We wanted to make the coke spray higher! We had lots of good ideas yesterday about how we could do that - bigger coke, more mentos etc.

Some of the big kids have already tried this and they told us that we needed to make something so we could get the mentos in quickly...

We were thinking very hard...and Jett was on to it...he thought we needed a big fat straw to put them in the bottle...so that is what we did. We made a thick straw out of some plastic. here is what happened...

Matthew - The mentos exploded in the coke.

Fergus - You have to put the mentos in quickly.

Zara - it went higher than yesterday because the little one was smaller and it didn't have much coke in it.

Jett - The coke landed on me!

Katherine - the coke went higher than yesterday.

Cooper - the coke went on the grass and some of the mentos did too!

Charlotte - It is too slow to use our hands to put the mentos in.

Aria - we had to make a tube.

Sophie - you have to put the mentos in fast!

We did an experiment today with coke and mentos. Before we did the experiment we needed to "predict" what would happen. Predicting means guessing/saying what we think might happen.

Here are our predictions...

Yassmine - I think it will explode in everyone's face.

Donatello - I think the coke will explode up the top.

Bridget - I think it will go up and everywhere.

Charlotte - I think the bottle will tip over.

Qwade - I think the bottle will tip over.

Luke - I think the bottle will crack open.

Sai - I think the bottle will go up and down.

Zara - I think the bottle will fall over and all of the coke will fall out.

Aria - I think the coke will jump up.

Cooper - I think it will explode because of the mentos.

Fergus - All of the coke will go on the table.

Ayushman - I think the water will come up and down.

Katherine - I think the mentos will explode out - pop, pop, pop!

Reagan - I think that it will explode up.

Ashlee - I think the coke will explode out.

Sohpie - The coke is going to come out of the bottle.

Jett - I think it will explode just like the volcano we made.

We went outside to see what would happen...Jett was right! It did look like the vocanoes we made! The coke bubbled up and spilled out of the bottle.

Jett - I think if we put more mentos in it will go higher.

Aria - I think we might need more coke to make it go higher.

Katherine - If we have a bigger bottle and more mentos it will explode out.

Charlotte - I think we need to fill the bottle up to the top.

Luke - I think we need 808 bottles to make it go up into space!

Charlotte - We are trying to 12 - 10 with the number lines.

Sophie - Elly writes them up and we have to work them out. The number lines help us.

Jett - We have been learning to do pluses. We use our hands. Sometimes Elly asks us to sit on our hands. It is trickier then. We have to think in our brains.

Rainbow Colours

Today we made rainbow colours with milk, food colouring and detergent. We did one together in a big bowl and then we had our own turn with little cups. I wonder why the colours all mixed together?

Cooper - It was a little bit like a puzzle, but it was a light. We didn't know how it worked, but a wire connected to a battery and then...

Charlotte - There was a big battery with a little wire coming out - you put a light bulb in and then you connect it to another battery. If you put it to the battery the light bulb went.

Ashlee - The battery was making the light go. Because if we broke the circuit, the light wont go.

Jett - We made a light like a Christmas tree.

Luke - We can add some wires. The little tweezers can open up.

Bridget - Ebony wrote a book about electricity and she read it to us.

Ashlee - No, actually it was a real author who wrote it.

The celery that is in the red food colouring has turned red. It happened really quickly! The celery that is in the blue food celery hasn't changed colour yet - maybe it will by the morning? Why did the celery not turn blue at the same time that the other celery turned red?

We are doing a science rotation for the next couple of weeks. Today we went to see Ngaire. Here is what we learnt about.

Cooper - We learnt how dinosaurs eat.

Luke - They have to eat rocks before their breakfast.

Matthew - The rocks rub the leaves together to make them smaller in their tummies.

Charlotte - I know that when dinosaurs were around we didn't live in houses we lived in caves.

Aria - We had paper towels and we had a jar with water. We put the towels in the jars. We got the towels, and the water got smaller.

Sophie - The water went in the paper towels.

Our Cloak Bay

Carolyn and a group of big kids came to see us today. They told us that they are going to paint a mural on the other side of our cloak bay. They needed our help. There are going to be lots of pictures from all of the letters of the alphabet. The big kids needed our help to think of things they could paint. We can't wait to see what they do!

We were excited to start learning about science today. Some of us didn't know what science was about. It is quite tricky to understand, but Elly explained that science is about how things work.

Today we explored a little bit about sound. We made panpipes and discovered that when you blow across the ends of straws, it makes a sound. If the straw is long is makes a low sound. If the straw is short, it makes a high sound. We also talked about how the air is vibrating down the straw.

We have just had our very first Discovery Time. This is a time when we play and learn about things like sharing, taking turns and speaking nicely to other people. Here are our photos from today.

Ebony has asked us to tell the BOT what we have been learning. Here is what is on top for us at the moment.

Qwade - I know how to make finger spaces in my writing book. I got better when I wrote my train story.

Cooper - I have been learning that I need to go back to the beginning of the sentence when I don't know a word. I am getting better because I am practising.

Zara - I have been learning to do good pictures. I need to do it slowly. If you go fast you will make a mistake.

Aria - I have been learning to do good pictures. I can do clothes now.

Fergus - I am learning to do the mihi. We do it everyday, so I am getting better.

Sai - I am learning how to do finger spaces.

Sophie - We have got 2 more parts to our mihi now - one is for the girls and one is for the boys.

Katherine - I have been learning to draw good shapes. I need to put the sides nice and straight for a triangle.

Ashlee - I have been learning to write my sentence clearly. I am practising at home and at school.

Charlotte - We have been learning our poems. We can read them in our books.

Ayushman - I am learning to put a bracket around my mistake in writing.

Bridget - I am learning how to write clearly. I am getting better because I don't like to make mistakes.

Luke - I am learning to write sentences. I am trying to do finger spaces.

We had a discussion today about reading. We talked about all we have learnt since we started school. Lots of us didn't know how to read when we started and now we are fantastic readers! Here are some of the ideas that we shared about our learning in reading.

We have learnt how to...
- look at the picture and the word.
- go back to the beginning of the sentence if we get stuck.
- think in our heads what the word might be.
- get our mouth ready for the first sound.
- jump our finger to each word.

Today we went for a walk over to Willard Home. Willard Home is a rest home that is next to our school. People live there who don't want to live by themselves anymore. Before we went, we had a discussion about how we wanted to share some of our learning to make the people at Willard Home happy. Here are our comments when we got back to school.

Cooper - we read to the Nannies.

Matthew - the people at Willard Home want to live together.

Aria - The people don't want to live by themselves.

Zara - They are old people and they want to live there.

jett - We read our poems.

Sophie - We had to get our two books and our poetry book.

Devin - We wanted to make them happy.

Cooper - they miss us in the holidays.

Ashlee - Yeah, they don't have holidays.

Zara - they could come to see us in our class.

They need help to walk.

Cooper - if they are old, they can jump the walker. If they are really old then they use the wheels.

I noticed that some of the old people know the same songs that we know. That is cool!
